Global Connections by Catalina Delgado-Trunk, on view on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, June 2020–March 2021
Catalina Delgado-Trunk, a native of Mexico who lives in Albuquerque, NM, draws from her heritage to create intricate works that reinterpret folklore. She describes herself as an activist, as she uses imagery to connect people of different cultures. She believes, across time and geography, we have asked the same questions: “Where do we come from, what are we doing here, and where are we going?” Pre-Columbian myths provide powerful answers.
The complexity of her work requires patience and time. Delgado-Trunk begins with drawings that form templates for her cutouts. After completing an image, she uses an X-Acto blade to cut the paper. For The Greenway, Delgado-Trunk’s papel picado has been photographed and printed onto vinyl, which is affixed to the Light Blades. Delgado-Trunk’s representations of universal themes of food, nature, and folklore engage with timely conversations around globalization, migration, and identity.

Ella se describe así misma como activista, a través del uso de imágenes que conectan a la gente de diferentes culturas. Ella cree que a través del tiempo y de la geografía todos nos hacemos las mismas preguntas: “¿De dónde venimos, qué hacemos aquí, y a dónde vamos?” Mitos pre-Colombinos proveen poderosas respuestas.
La complejidad artesanal de su obra requiere paciencia y tiempo. Delgado-Trunk empieza haciendo bocetos que luego transforma en patrones para su obra de papel picado. Una vez terminada una imagen, ella usa un exacto para cortar el papel. La obra en papel picado de Delgado-Trunk ha sido fotografiada e impresa en material vinílico, el cual se montó en estos paneles. Las representaciones universales de Delgado-Trunk de comida, naturaleza y folklore llegan el conversacion actual en torno a la globalización, la imigración y la identidad cultural.
